Each night, for the next 30 days, write a list of at least 5 of you achievements or successes for the day (big and small). How does focusing on achievements/successes change your mood, self-esteem, and confidence?

Often, we're so focused on our perceived failures or shortfalls that we completely ignore or minimize all of the things we accomplish each day. What would life be like if you spent as much time and energy focusing on the positive as you do the negative?

Think about it and give it a try. What do you have to lose?

All too frequently we relate like timid birds who don't dare to leave the nest. Here we sit in a nest that's getting pretty smelly and that hasn't served its function for a very long time. No one is arriving to feed us. No one is protecting us and keeping us warm. And yet we keep hoping mother bird will arrive.

We could do ourselves the ultimate favor and finally get out of that nest. That this takes courage is obvious. That we could use some help is also clear. We may doubt that we're up to being a warrier-in-training. But we can ask ourselves this question: "Do I prefer to grow up and relate to life directly, or do I choose to live and die in fear?" - Pema Chodron, The Places That Scare You: A Guide to Fearlessness in Difficult Times

Katie Goode, M.A., MFC 45129

Eating Disorder and Anxiety Specialist
4199 Campus Drive, Suite 550, Irvine, CA 92612

(949) 395-7161
www.HolisticTherapyOC.com

Follow me on Twitter at http://www.Twitter.com/KatieGoode

In patients with
bulimia, medical complications vary with the means of purging utilized,
and shifts of fluid and electrolytes both before and during treatment
must be recognized and managed.
According to Dr. Andrew Weil, the World Health Organization has predicted that more people will be affected by depression than any other health problem by the year 2030. In the USA, Depression is usually treated with medication "a complex, multifaceted problem is frequently treated with an
oversimplified, expensive therapy that, sadly, is often ineffective."

What else can we do for Depression?

Dr. Weil's article details the options he teaches at the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine (the program Dr. Weil founded in
1994 at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson):

- Nutritional Approaches including specific diet and supplement recommendations
- Somatic Approaches: exercise, phototherapy, acupuncture, and massage
- Mind-body Approaches: psychotherapy, yoga, meditation, mindfulness training, and conscious efforts to socialize

To read the complete article, visit http://www.huffingtonpost.com/andrew-weil-md/integrative-mental-health_b_354332.html
There's an interesting blog post on Psychology Today about Mindfulness for Depression. The author struggles with Bipolar Disorder and has learned to use mindfulness to help her manage her moods.

Practical mindfulness, one tool I use to manage the emotional storms
of my mood disorder, involves something more: a purposeful,
‘unconditional friendliness' and awareness towards the inner goings-on
of my mind, the subtle shifts in my emotions and body, ideally, just as
the microscopic changes from ‘normal' mood into depression begin.
Under this warm light of compassionate witnessing, unspoken, almost unbelievable, transformations start to take place.
Practicing this art daily, when things are going well or
especially when they're not, increases clarity, compassion, patience,
and allows well-being to unfold.

To read the entire article, visit Psychology Today.

I'm often asked "what is yoga therapy?" and "how can yoga be used in therapy?" so I thought I'd pass on some information from some leading yoga experts:

This article originally appeared in the April 2006 edition of Yogi Times:

"Yoga Therapy: Unlocking the Hidden Vitality" by Antonio Sausys

It's
widely known that Yoga can enhance your physical and emotional well
being, but when Yoga is practiced with a therapeutic intention in the
form of Yoga Therapy, it can help prevent and aid recovery from
physical and mental ailments. Yoga has long been practiced with
therapeutic intentions as way of transforming both the body and the
mind.

According to
classical texts, most of the problems in our health come from a state
of ignorance of who and what we are. From a psychological standpoint, therapy is defined as the
possibility of accessing self-knowledge that will enable us to change
that what we consider dysfunctional. A number of research studies have
proven the effectiveness of Yoga Therapy as developing exactly that
type of awareness.

On a
psychological level, the introspection promoted by yoga is essential to
the self-knowledge process that fuels psychic transformation. The
different relaxation techniques allow the troubled mind to calm and
decrease its activity while promoting stability. A good example would be the way Yoga Therapy can help overcome panic
attacks. By practicing a balancing breathing technique, a sense of
control is gained, combating the fear and anxiety produced by its loss.

To read the article in its entirety, visit: http://www.yogatherapyconference.com/what_is_yoga_therapy.html

Some definitions of yoga therapy:

Yoga therapy is a holistic healing art. Rather than prescribe treatments, it invites presence and awareness. Using age-old yogic approaches to deeper presence and awareness, we are able to know ourselves more fully. Out of that knowing, we are more easily moved to embrace the opportunity for change, growth, and enhanced well-being in body, feelings, thought, and spirit. – Michael Lee

Yoga therapy is that facet of the ancient science of Yoga that focuses on health and wellness at all levels of the person: physical, psychological, and spiritual. Yoga therapy focuses on the path of Yoga as a healing journey that brings balance to the body and mind through an experiential understanding of the primary intention of Yoga: awakening of Spirit, our essential nature. - Joseph LePage

Yoga therapy may be defined as the application of yogic principals to a particular person with the objective of achieving a particular spiritual, psychological, or physiological goal. The means employed are comprised of intelligently conceived steps that include …the application of meditation, textual study, spiritual or psychological counseling, chanting, imagery, prayer, and ritual to meet the needs of the individual. Yoga therapy respects individual differences in age, culture, religion, philosophy, occupation, and mental and physical health. The knowledgeable and competent yogin or yogini applies Yoga Therapy according to the period, the place, and the practitioner’s age, strength, and activities. – Richard Miller, Ph.D.

(Yoga therapy is) the use of the techniques of Yoga to
create, stimulate, and maintain an optimum state of physical,
emotional, mental, and spiritual health. - Judith Hanson Lasater, Ph.D.
